Wallpaper has seen a rise in popularity over the last few years, with a move away from minimalist white walls to bold, beautiful patterns to add colour and warmth to your home. A well-chosen wallpaper can really make your house a home and create a striking, unique look.
Wallpaper can be used in any room in the house – either in the whole room or just on a feature wall. Here’s how to get it right:
Where will it go?
Think about the use of the room you are putting wallpaper up in – you might not want a bright busy pattern in the bedroom where you will sleep and relax. Busier and bright patterns are better suited to hallways, a WC, utility room or kitchen.
Consider the flow
If you have wallpaper in adjacent rooms, make sure they compliment each other rather than clash – you could choose different designs from one collection as these are often designed to work together.
Choosing a pattern size
Small prints are subtle and understated whereas the larger, bold patterns are more dramatic and make a statement. Make sure you can live with the larger patterns before taking the leap as these can date a little quicker than the smaller ones. If you have a trailing design or stripes that run from floor to ceiling it can make the ceilings look taller so these work well in newer homes.
Get inspiration
Make sure you get a good-sized sample before having the wallpaper fitted. Hang it the area you are considering and live with it for a few days to make sure it’s right for you. Take a look at galleries online and websites like Houzz and Pinterest for ideas of how it will look. Also ask your retailer if they have an images of the wallpaper installed in a customer’s home or within any sales materials.
